Los Angeles renters guide

newly moved renters sitting on the couch

Los Angeles is a sprawling city with plenty to offer. The clear weather, rich culture, and unique activities are just a few reasons many are choosing to rent a home in this vibrant area.

Here’s everything you need to know about renting in Los Angeles.

Finding the right property

Now that you already have an idea of what to expect as a renter in LA, it’s time to start searching for the perfect rental. Here are the factors that you need to consider:

  • Location

Location is always a factor when it comes to a place to live. Is it close to where you work? Do you have access to your main hobbies? How easy is it to get in and out of the area? Are you looking for a central location or something a bit further away from the city?

  • Neighborhood

Los Angeles offers a variety of neighborhoods, including Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Rancho Park, Brentwood, West Hollywood, and West Los Angeles. Each one is unique, with a vibe to match. Many of these neighborhoods consist of luxury single-family homes and apartments for rent, offering stunning views, tree-lined streets, and five-star amenities.

As you search for the right Los Angeles neighborhood, it’s important to figure out what you’re looking for. This will help you narrow down your options until you find the neighborhood that suits your needs and wants.

  • Amenities

When looking for a property to rent out, you must also consider the perks of the place. Many of the luxury apartments in Los Angeles offer indoor and outdoor amenities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, and fitness facilities.

  • Rental rate

According to RENTCafé, the average cost of renting a luxury apartment in Los Angeles starts from around $4,000. Location, amenities, and square footage will determine the rent you eventually have to pay for. As you search for potential apartments, it’s always best to have an idea of how much you are willing to spend each month.

Rent control

If you plan on renting a home in Los Angeles, learn about rent control. LA’s rent control law puts a cap of 3 – 8% on a landlord’s ability to increase the rent on apartments, duplexes, and triplexes built before 1995. Single-family home rentals and condominiums are not included.

To find out if the apartment you’re interested in is rent-controlled, ask the landlord or check city hall records.

Pet policies

It’s common for apartment buildings to ban pets. If you want to bring in your furry friends, look for pet-friendly apartments. Find out how many pets you’re allowed to keep in your apartment, the maximum weight limit of each, and the breed restrictions if any.
