Los Angeles renters guide

Los Angeles is a sprawling city with plenty to offer. The clear weather, rich culture, and unique activities are just a few reasons many are choosing to rent a home in this vibrant area.

Here’s everything you need to know about renting in Los Angeles.

Finding the right property

Now that you already have an idea of what to expect as a renter in LA, it’s time to start searching for the perfect rental. Here are the factors that you need to consider:

Rent control

If you plan on renting a home in Los Angeles, learn about rent control. LA’s rent control law puts a cap of 3 – 8% on a landlord’s ability to increase the rent on apartments, duplexes, and triplexes built before 1995. Single-family home rentals and condominiums are not included.

To find out if the apartment you’re interested in is rent-controlled, ask the landlord or check city hall records.

Pet policies

It’s common for apartment buildings to ban pets. If you want to bring in your furry friends, look for pet-friendly apartments. Find out how many pets you’re allowed to keep in your apartment, the maximum weight limit of each, and the breed restrictions if any.
